It is no secret that the Covid pandemic has given a very strong stimulus to the development of e-commerce and online sales, and as a result, the number of postages has increased. Progress does not stand still, and the global struggle for environmental friendliness of packaging has also affected packaging for shipping goods. In our opinion, two innovations deserve special interest, which will be discussed below.
The Swiss company Fromm Packaging Systems recently introduced its new paper-based paddy product. Airpad is essentially a paper cushion filled with air. It perfectly replaces plastic-based laying or crumpled paper. According to the manufacturer, Airpad is 90% air and only 1% paper. It can also be recycled along with any other paper product. Airpad rolls are produced on a small Airpad 150 machine sold by the company and claimed to be low maintenance and easy to use.
Australian company Hero Packaging has gone even further in its fight against plastic in its packaging. This company has created a new material for postal bags that is homemade and is waterproof and durable like plastic. Hero's product range consists of plant-based materials such as PLA and PBAT certified compostable cornstarch-based material. To recycle the bag, remove the postage label from the bag, then cut into pieces and place in compost or trash can. The bag is completely destroyed and turns into compost after 90-120 days. The company is currently working on a fully compostable scotch tape used for shipping.
