The development that we will now talk about is not new, but it is definitely worthy of attention. Primarily due to the ever-increasing number of practical tests and expanding application possibilities.
Vidre+ is a product of the Polish company Fresh Inset, a small sticker that can significantly increase the shelf life and fresh appearance of vegetables, fruits and herbs. The sticker contains a substance called 1-MCP, which is used in the fruit and vegetable industry to slow down the ripening process. After Vidre+ is applied, this substance begins to be released and softens the effect of ethylene, which is responsible for the ripening of the product. This increases the shelf life significantly. It will, of course, be different for different products, but, for example, according to recent studies, the shelf life of arugula has increased by 24 days, and spinach by 10 days. Considering that greens, in principle, are stored for a very short time, the numbers are impressive.
Stickers can be placed either inside the package or directly on the product itself. And to use them you do not need any additional equipment. No special storage conditions are required for products with these labels. Tests have already been carried out on a large number of vegetables and fruits, and even on mushrooms, and now on greens. And in each case the result was very high.
Vidre+ is already operational in South American markets and is awaiting final regulatory approval in North America, Europe and Asia. This development is an example of how a small piece of paper can significantly reduce food waste.
