Can paper packaging be airtight? Of course, yes. That is the claim made by the Swedish company Billerud, which introduced the new heat-sealable packaging paper ConFlex HeatSeal.

According to the manufacturer, this paper is ideal for switching from plastic to paper packaging where hermeticity is required. The main advantage of such a switch, in addition to customer loyalty to more environmentally friendly packaging, is the ability to work with the new material on already installed packaging equipment. It is stated that only a small readjustment of the sealing jaws is required, for which Billerud provides advice, but not a replacement of the entire machine.

This paper packaging is also subject to further processing in the paper stream. However, the manufacturer specifies that additional consultations with him on this issue may be required.

Apparently ConFlex HeatSeal does not have barrier properties - at least we did not find any mention of this.

At the moment, this paper is already used for packaging bedding. The manufacturer also suggests that it could be an excellent replacement for plastic in packaging diapers or any other products where hermeticity is needed, but there is no need for barrier properties or sterility.
