Chinese company YUTOECO has unveiled its latest development, FluoZero™, a PFAS-free grease-proof coating technology for molded paper food packaging. What's so interesting about it, you ask? Let's find out more.
First, it is worth clarifying why everyone is so eager to get rid of PFAS in food packaging. Relatively recently, doctors have determined that these “eternal chemicals” get into food through packaging and accumulate in the human body, causing many serious diseases. The use of PFAS in packaging is constantly limited, but they could not completely abandon it, since all existing alternatives have their own serious drawbacks.
The manufacturers of FluoZero claim that their coating not only does not contain PFAS, but is also made entirely from plant-based materials and agricultural by-products. This means that it decomposes naturally without releasing harmful substances and is renewable.
Molded fiber packaging treated with FluoZero provides 8 hours of grease resistance and can withstand temperatures from -34°C to 220°C without degradation. This makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, including frozen food packaging, airline meals, and high-temperature fried food containers. FluoZero treatment also increases the tear resistance and stiffness of the packaging, meaning that the packaging can be made thinner and use less material.
The technology has already received USDA Bio-certification and BPI, Din Certco Compostability Certification and complies with FDA food contact regulations.
