Combining digital and paper information - is it possible? Sappi and ISBC has proven that yes. The result is a sheet-fed product produced from a 100% fibrous base made from Swiss matte Sappi paper. ISBC's RFID chips are built in the sheets of paper without affecting the surface of the paper - it stays flat and smooth.
Sappi large format inkjet paper has been selected for its whiteness, excellent print results and excellent scratch and moisture resistance. The companies report that the printability of smart paper is no different from conventional paper and does not require special equipment to work with it. The necessary information is simply transferred to a chip embedded in the paper: ISBC has developed a special machine and training materials for this encoding.
We can already say that this development has broad prospects for use. These are documents that require authentication, for example, diplomas and certificates, and contactless tickets for various vehicles, gift cards and store certificates, various subscriptions, key cards, etc. Even for ordinary postcards, this technology can give a second wind by integrating a chip with an interactive URL.
The use of such "chip" paper in packaging opens up wide opportunities for manufacturers: from accurate tracking of the movement of goods to new design and game solutions to attract the attention of the buyer.
