Last week, Sonoco made two news headlines with its developments. Both were related to the transition to packaging in the form of entirely paper, and therefore recyclable, cans and tubes.

The first news is related to the partnership between Sonoco and the manufacturer of the world-famous Pringles chips. We have already written that they want to create a more environmentally friendly and recyclable packaging for Pringles, while preserving the already familiar tube shape. And now, after long studies that have proven that the new packaging retains all the properties of the chips for 15 months, Pringles paper tubes are going on sale throughout Ireland. The steel base in them is replaced with paper, the tubes themselves are made of recycled paper, and after use they can be sent for recycling like paper or simply thrown away. The plastic cap of the tube is also recyclable.

The second news item concerns the collaboration between Sonoco and the British company Marigold Health Foods, a producer of natural plant-based food products. Sonoco employees developed packaging for this company in the form of a paper can, which can be used to pack bouillon cubes, sauces, nutritional yeast, etc. The previous packaging for these products was a can with a cardboard body on a metal base, which is extremely difficult to recycle. The new can is 95% paper. The remaining 5% is an inner liner used to protect the product. In addition, there is an aluminum seal and a plastic can lid, which are also subject to further recycling.

In general, both news boils down to the fact that Sonoco has found a way to create a packaging container in the form of a can, consisting entirely of paper fiber and available for recycling, without losing the quality of storing the products in it.
