On January 25, 2022, PepsiCo issued a very blunt statement. The company plans to completely get rid of the original raw materials in the packaging of its chips by 2030 and replace them with recycled plastics. First of all, this will affect the brands Walkers, Doritos and Lay's.
The company's claims are not unfounded. The first market tests of the new packages are planned for this year. First, in the first half of 2022, chips Lay's are planned to be sold in France in packaging made from recyclable plastic, and then, a little later, in the UK, Walkers should be sold in packaging made of recycled plastics. Probably, the markets for testing new packaging were not chosen by chance - both countries have recently opposed the use of virgin plastics in packaging solutions at the legislative level.
However, in its plans, PepsiCo goes even further than its own production and packaging replacement. PepsiCo says it is ready to do much to help build a circular economy for flexible packaging across Europe and encourages other investors to join the effort. “Flexible packaging recycling should be the norm across Europe,” says Silviu Popovici, PepsiCo Europe’s CEO. “We’re investing with our partners to build technological capacity to do that. We now need an appropriate regulatory landscape in place so that packaging never becomes waste,” he adds.
We`ll remind you that 2022 should already be a difficult year for the implementation of the company's plans. Because PepsiCo previously committed to transitioning Pepsi to recycled PET bottles in 11 European markets this year. And has already faced the problem of increased demand for recycled plastic and rising prices for it.
