The past week has intrigued us with one piece of news. Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) have managed to create edible drinking straws. Yes, the same ones that were disposable plastic (banned in many countries) and are now paper (not the same feeling at all).
The straws were made from so-called cattle millet and the result was quite promising. This version of straws is already being called a great alternative to plastic and paper. Made from millet, they are not only completely biodegradable, they are edible. At the same time, they are quite durable and retain their structural integrity in liquids, and do not contain any chemicals.
Millet itself is a climate-resistant crop that is a source of easily digestible protein. That is, these tubes are also useful.
It is worth noting that tableware made from millet is nothing new. Last year, researchers from the same institute created edible cups made from millet, which are already being used in India as an alternative to plastic ones.
