Let's clarify right away that we will be talking about industrial hemp. And about how one of the major European companies, in partnership with a Ukrainian company, offers a real scalable alternative to cellulose products not made from trees.
This is what the German company PAPACKS and the Ukrainian Ukrainian Hemp have announced. The former is a major manufacturer of molded fiber packaging with offices in Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and a branch in the United States. The latter is one of the few large Ukrainian companies that professionally and on a large scale is engaged in the cultivation of industrial hemp.
Both companies have announced the creation of infrastructure to process hemp into molded fiber, pulp, and packaging, aiming to supply it on an industrial scale applicable to all industries. And this option looks quite attractive. After all, hemp, unlike trees, grows in a few months, and can be grown in many regions. And of course, it is an opportunity to save forests.
A PAPACKS representative states that packaging made from hemp fibres complies with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), is more than 80% recyclable through the paper stream and meets international food and pharmaceutical safety standards including BfR, FDA and BRCGS.
It is the first truly scalable and sustainable alternative to wood pulp and plastic in industrial-scale packaging production.
