Yes, we have written about such solutions many times. And we will probably write about them many more times. They all seem similar, but each is unique in its own way. And also, different manufacturers have different specifics of application, different levels of barrier properties, different prices and terms of purchase, finally.

Now we will talk about a joint development of UPM Specialty Papers and Eastman, which is a paper packaging solution with a biopolymer coating, designed for packaging products that require increased barrier properties for fat and oxygen. This primarily concerns confectionery, frozen semi-finished products, etc.

The solution integrates Eastman’s biobased and compostable Solus™ performance additives with BioPBSTM polymer to form a thin coating onto UPM’s compostable and recyclable barrier base papers. This significantly increases the barrier properties of the latter. At the same time, the coating layer is so thin that both companies claim the packaging is recyclable along with regular paper.

The new solution has excellent heat sealability and is even compatible with traditional LDPE extrusion coating equipment. It can therefore be used freely on existing packaging equipment without requiring any modifications.
