Actually, let's not make an intrigue - the news itself is already in the headline. We can only add details and details to it. It all started with the cooperation of two major companies: UPM Specialty Papers and Henkel.

The two companies presented their latest joint development, heat sealable barrier paper for food packaging, which is fully recyclable, at the recent Interpack 2023 trade fair. The new material is extremely greaseproof and can be recycled like normal paper. It is a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plastic packaging.

What is the innovation, you might ask? The fact is that conventional heat sealable packaging is most often laminated with plastic or a multilayer solution, which makes it very difficult to recycle. Here, on the other hand, a special coating has been used which not only enables this paper packaging to be recycled in the normal recycling stream, but also helps to restore the round shape of the fibres. And, of course, an important detail is that the material is suitable for use on existing packaging lines. This was demonstrated at the trade fair.

This is not the only innovative solution presented by UPM Specialty Papers. In addition to it, a recyclable, renewable fibre-based pouch for dry, frozen and fatty foods, created using horizontal pouch production equipment, was shown at the show. More details about both packaging solutions can be found on the company's website.
