Canadian company Nexe Innovations has released its new espresso blend in fully compostable coffee capsules. This is the company's patented technology that they have been working on for the past 6 years. The capsule disintegrates completely in 35 days. And besides, the company produces these capsules using 3D printing.

"3D printing is an amazing technology and I think in the future we will see more companies use it to make new products." says Zach Hudson, Chief Scientist at Nexe Innovations. More and more new technologies, such as Digital Light Synthesis, are emerging that allow 3D printing to scale for large manufacturing functions and capacities, he said.

The idea of compostable coffee capsules is not new - a couple of years ago, Lavazza introduced its coffee in similar capsules. However, Nexe claims their capsules have better breakdown rates and a large volume of packaged coffee. NEXE capsules are fully compatible with popular Nespresso coffee machines. They are made from a material obtained by combining compostable polymers and plant fibers, and completely disintegrate into natural and non-toxic materials within 30-35 days. At the moment, the capsules are completely composted when processed in special enterprises. However, the company is working on the possibility to complete disintegration of the capsules in a conventional compost pit.
