Parfums Christian Dior becomes the first company in the cosmetics industry to use a completely plant-based PEF polymer for its primary packaging. This is the result of a three-year collaboration with Avantium, which actually developed the polymer, called Releaf.
It is a fossil fuel-free material that is fully recyclable in existing systems, yet Releaf has exceptional properties that provide optimal protection for formulas while maintaining their quality.
The technology for producing this polymer is based on obtaining FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), a key building block for the sustainable plastic PEF (polyethylene furanoate), from plant sugars.
At the end of October, Avantium opened its first PEF production plant in the Netherlands, with the goal of running it at full capacity and reaching large-scale production of the polymer by early 2025.
