Carlsberg is partnering with Avantium to bring to market 100% plant-based, 100% recyclable beer bottles with a wood fiber outer shell and a PEF inner coating. The new development is called Fiber Bottle and this is the first time it has been used in a large scale production.

PEF is a 100% plant-based and recyclable bioplastic with excellent barrier properties, well above those of PET. The outer shell of the bottle is made of wood fiber, which has higher thermal insulation properties compared to a glass bottle or jar. If not for the lid, one could say that the bottle is 100% made from biomaterial.

At the moment, it is not expected to replace the existing packaging in the form of cans and glass bottles with a new bottle. The innovation enters the market rather as an environmentally friendly alternative to the usual packaging. The project has so far been called a pilot project by the company and is designed to assess the reaction of consumers to a new bottle. Now only 8000 Fiber Bottles will be produced, which will be distributed to 8 European countries participating in the project. Carlsberg intends to distribute bottles at select summer events, including festivals, flagship events, tastings, to collect feedback from consumers, customers and other stakeholders. The company already says that this extensive testing will serve as the basis for improving the design of the Fiber Bottle, and plans to continue to use it in its production.
