We are already tired of being surprised by news from the world of packaging. Almost every one of them destroys some templates in determining the optimal packaging for a particular type of product. And this news causes rather bewilderment and surprise, and only then admiration.

The Aldi supermarket chain in the UK has released one of its own wines in an aluminium bottle. Why is this surprising? For some reason, we always thought that wine does not keep well in metal containers, as it can react with it. On the other hand, the same beer has long been packaged in aluminium cans…

So here's the deal - on April 14, aluminium wine bottles will be hitting UK supermarket shelves. They're 75% lighter than their glass counterparts and completely recyclable. We're sure they've done enough testing before releasing these bottles to say they won't change the taste of the wine, but time will tell.

This isn't Aldi's first foray into wine packaging. They've already launched an ultra-light glass wine bottle and a paper bottle. Both were filled with their own wines, and won them the award for Sustainable Drinks Retailer of the Year at The Drinks Retailing Awards.
