We've written about barrier coatings before, but the topic remains relevant. After all, plastic-based barrier coatings often make recycling paper packaging difficult or impossible. British company Xampla offers a solution.
Some time ago, they introduced their new product, Morro Coating, to the market. This plant-based barrier coating is completely free of plastic and PFAS. It is considered biodegradable and compostable, making paper packaging fully recyclable. According to the manufacturer, Morro Coating offers excellent barrier properties against grease, water, and oxygen, making it ideal for food packaging.
The new product hasn't gone unnoticed in the market, and cardboard takeaway food boxes with the new coating are already being produced in partnership with Just Eat Takeaway.com and Huhtamaki. The company is currently undergoing Morro Coating certification at the National Laboratory.
We'd like to point out that the plant-based barrier coating isn't the company's only product under the Morro brand. They also offer water-soluble film and even edible film. Both are already being successfully implemented into production.
Xampla's barrier coating has been nominated for the prestigious 2025 Sustainability Awards.
