Self-cooling beverage can
It feels like the perfect moment to shout, "Hurrah! Finally!"—though, of course, we won't actually shout; instead, we’ll simply tell you about this new product, which is already ready for mass production. This unique innovation, known as Cool>Can, was introduced to the market by the British startup deltaH Innovations. While the launch actually took place last year, the technology has only now been patented and readied for scalable production and integration into existing manufacturing lines.
The technology is based on a dual-can system with a salt-based reagent placed between the walls. The inner can holds the beverage, while the small space between the outer and inner cans contains the salt-based reagent and water, kept separate from each other. A button at the bottom of the outer can triggers a chemical reaction that generates a cooling effect when pressed. Depending on the initial temperature, the beverage inside the can is cooled by 10–15 degrees.
As we gathered from an interview with James Weiss, the founder and director of deltaH, the manufacturer fills its beverage into standard slim cans. The can containing the drink is then inserted into an outer can and mechanically sealed to it. Finally, the cooling mechanism is attached.
The entire assembly, consisting of the two cans and the cooling agent, is recyclable just like standard cans. The technology's developers also sought to make it cost-effective and as easy as possible to integrate into existing manufacturing and logistics processes.
A pilot line is currently operating at the plant in Wales, already producing cans for the craft brewer Brains Brewery. The product itself can be viewed in person at London Packaging Week 2026, but it is already clear that this new offering has sparked immense interest among major players in the beverage industry.
