Drank a beer, put on a mask - ready for Halloween
Once again, we've come across an example of packaging design that expands its scope of use. This is a beer box featuring a mask of the well-known character from the horror film "Friday the 13th."
This box is part of a larger marketing campaign dedicated to the release of the new TV series "Crystal Lake." But we're not talking about the show, we're talking about the boxes. They will be used to package beer from Pabst Blue Ribbon, which is releasing this merchandise in collaboration with Horror, Inc. And of course, both companies timed the release of the new box not so much to the show as to Halloween, traditionally celebrated at the very end of October.
"We turned a 12-pack (cans of beer) into a Jason mask and, in the process, solved that all-too-familiar problem of figuring out a last-minute Halloween costume. Cut out the mask, or just wear the whole box on your head…either way, you'll likely still have one of the best costumes of the night" said Zac Nadile, Head of Brand Strategy at Pabst Brewing Company.
Honestly, we're not sure about putting the box on your head, but the mask idea seems very clever to us. It's a truly simple and effective design for seasonal fall sales in the lead-up to the holiday. It also encourages people to use the eco-friendly cardboard mask they already have on hand instead of buying a plastic one. Both will inevitably end up in the trash after Halloween, and the cardboard one will be far less harmful.
